The FTA has extended the deadline for submitting VAT returns and the payment of due tax to May 28, 2020. This exception applies to VAT registrants who have monthly and quarterly tax periods ending on March 31, 2020. It does not apply to any other tax period. VAT registrants are to ensure that the data is accurate in their VAT returns and that the FTA receives the payable tax for the tax period ending March 31, 2020, by Thursday, May 28, 2020. They are to abide by all other tax obligations as usual. This step has been taken to support the VAT registrants and allow them to fulfill their tax obligations without facing any problems. The UAE has taken many precautionary measures to curb the spread of Covid-19. One of them is restricting the movements of people and vehicles in certain areas, which coincides with the deadline for filing VAT returns. Many businesses are affected due to this. However, these are necessary measures to safeguard public health. Among others, actions include a nationwide disinfection campaign, the shutdown of malls and markets, suspension of flights, remote working for the public and private sector, distance learning for schools and universities.
